Breakfast is a compound word. It combines break, as in end, and fast, as in not eating. Essentially, breakfast is the end of the not eating time (typically after a longer resting period—a good night's sleep). It's the first meal of the day, designed to wake up your senses, as well as your digestive tract.
Usually the most neglected meal of the day, it is arguably one of the more important steps to a healthy lifestyle. By combining fruits and grains, a quick and lasting base of energy can be introduced to the body to get a fast start and lasting ability to get things done in the morning. Often times a protein of eggs or meat or vegetarian sources is included to prepare the muscles for the day's work.
